Contrary to the beliefs of some, the hair on our bodies is not permanent but undergoing a constant cycle of growth, shedding, and regrowth. Both our hair and our fingernails are made up of a substance called keratin. Hair grows from follicles that are located in the second layer of our skin, the layer called the dermis. After the hair is done actively growing, the follicle which holds it disintegrates, which causes the hair to fall out.
After that, a new follicle appears and the whole cycle starts over. The hairs on your head are replaced every two to five years, while eyebrow hair is replaced every four months. Alopecia is a condition that involves hair loss- this condition is also commonly known as baldness.
The hair undergoes a similar cycle for women too. But the hair-fall pattern is not similar to that of men. For men, the hair starts falling at the temples and gradually proceeds to the top of the head, leaving a tuft of hair at the sides and back of the head.
