Shaving Tips for Brides

Posted by Jessica Marie Sullivan On January - 14 - 2012

To shave or not is a matter of personal choice. There has not been any scientific proof that shows health benefits of shaving. However, most women prefer to shave for aesthetic reasons. Shaving also becomes increasingly important on special occasions, like weddings. Having great looking skin will not only wow your guests, but will also contribute to wonderful wedding photographs.

Although waxing and laser hair removal have become popular these days, shaving remains to be the cheapest form of hair removal. We all know that shaving can be quite difficult. If done the wrong way, we may get cuts or nicks. To help you avoid these, here are 10 shaving tips you may be interested to read:

1. It is important to make your skin damp to soften it from the heat and moisture. If you shave on a dry skin, you may clog the razor with dead skin and could run the risk of getting nicks and razor burns.

2. Remember to use shaving foam. Shaving foam for men and for women are actually the same, except perhaps for the scent.

3. There are a lot of different razors on the market, so it can be a mission to find the right razor. You will actually have to do a lot of trials and errors to find the perfect one for you. Once you’ve found it, stick to it. In my case, I prefer Gillette’s Soothing Vibrations Razor for Women.

4. Don’t forget to change razors regularly. A dull blade usually causes nicks, so be sure to buy a new razor when needed.

5. Remember not to borrow your guy’s razor. You would think it’s all right, but it actually isn’t. A man’s hair texture is different from a woman’s, so it is logical that men and women have different razors. This may be very unlikely, but if you borrow someone else’s razor, you run the risk of getting Hepatitis C from fresh blood on a razor.

6. When shaving, start at your ankles and shave upwards. This is because your leg hairs grow downwards. In terms of armpits, you might want to shave in every direction as the hair there grown in many different angles.

7. Exfoliate, exfoliate, and exfoliate! When you exfoliate, you get rid of your dead skin cells. This makes your skin cleaner and more refreshed. You could use exfoliating gloves or a dry brush before you take a shower.

8. After you have finished shaving, make sure to apply moisturizer. Some people oil instead of moisturizer, depending on the season or weather. Your legs have a few oil glands, which makes it more prone to dryness.

9. Go slow!

10. How often you shave really depends on you. Some women choose to shave every other day, while other shave every ten days.

Why Do Razor Bumps Occur?

Posted by Robert Bartlefston On January - 13 - 2012

Razor bumps can be a major nuisance to your daily shaving routine. They most often occur on people who have to shave on a regular basis, but they can occur on anyone who has to shave. This causes a lot of pain and suffering for those with the razor bumps.

It is primarily caused after a shave, where the hair curls back and grows into the skin. This is also known as an ingrown hair. Getting a really close shave can also aggravate this situation, as the hair is cut off closer to the surface of the skin and has a higher chance of becoming ingrown.

Men tend to get razor bumps on their face and neck, while women tend to get razor bumps on their legs, under their arms and their pubic area. Unfortunately, razor bumps can cause acne to develop on the skin. These areas are effected the worst due to more consistent shaving.

Shaving is not the only way to get razor bumps, in fact, other hair removal methods can make your chances even greater for getting the bumps. Plucking, waxing and electrolysis are all methods that can cause the bumps. In fact, due to the depth of where the hair follicle is destroyed, it can cause an even worse reaction than shaving and can lead to sever razor bumps for a period of time.

In addition to the methods used for removing unwanted hair, there are some other factors that can lead to ingrown hairs or bumps. People prone to excessive sweating, can have their perspiration agitate the newly shaved areas. This can cause dirt or oil to become trapped under the surface of the skin where it can cause infection. Hair follicles infected with staphylococcus aureus will create unsightly bumps on the skin surface.

Skin can also become irritated if a substance is rubbed against directly after shaving. It is not uncommon to find razor bumps occur if an article of clothing is rubbing against the newly shaved area. Women will often find bumps along their shaved bikini line if they wear tight panties.

A good skin care routine and taking the right precautions when shaving will help to prevent razor bumps, but it is important that if you have severe razor bumps, to see a dermatologist and to make sure they heal, before they get infected.

How To Improve Your Skin

Posted by Katholyn Esthianiaggo On January - 6 - 2012

If you didn’t already know, our skin is the largest organ of our body. On top of being the largest organ it is also the most sensitive, plays a major role in our health and since it is the one layer that protects our body it should be treated with the utmost care.

We all take advantage of our skin and should start appreciating it more and take better care of it. Doing so will not only improve our skin but also greatly improve our health. Before we can do this we must understand what things are good for the skin and what things are not so good for the skin.

Here are just a few habits that we should do away with as soon as possible:

The first habit you must change is not shaving with a lubricant. Shaving without lubrication causes skin irritation, razor burn, and even ingrown hairs to produce.

To prevent this from happening you should use shaving cream to help soften the skin. Hand soap should not be considered as lubrication or to soften the skin since it dries out the skin and increases the likelihood of more cuts. Make sure to use long strokes when shaving as opposed to short strokes since they are less stressful for the skin. After you’re done shaving, it’s a good idea to apply some after-shave lotion to the areas shaved.

Exposing our skin to the sun for long durations is another habit we should try to break. Those little strolls in the park that you think are too short are actually long enough to cause wrinkles, age spots, and dullness of your skin tone. This is why no matter how short of a time you think you spend in the sun, you should always apply some high SPF protective sunblock.

One final habit we should improve on is routinely exfoliating our skin. Exfoliation is a great addition to your regimen of cleansing routines and produces long term benefits for your skin. Not only does exfoliating your skin get rid of dead skin cells, but it also greatly improves the circulation of the top layer of your skin which can potentially remove blotches of the skin and also improve and even out skin tone.
