If you grew up with frizzy hair, chances are you had no friends, you were excluded from anything considered cool, and kids made fun of you. You probably would have preferred having two heads (with shiny straight hair!), three legs or four hands. Anything at all – but not frizz ! No matter how cute you might have been, or how groovy your clothes were, nothing kills a look like frizz.
Lifelong frizzy hair victims would rather be subjected to untold diseases – they can be cured with medicine, potions, or time. Frizz ? Even science can’t figure out how to tame it, never mind find a cure. Since real frizz is something you are born with, it can only be cured at the genetic level. Frizz is a genetic defect just like being predisposed to cancer – however, until frizz becomes a life threatening malady, science won’t be looking for grant money to do much about researching its causes and solutions.
And there was little you could do about. Kids back then didn’t carry around curling irons or straightening irons or anything else that might help a little – they hadn’t been invented. Their only recourse was maybe some more heavy duty hair spray and – hope no one sees you for the rest of the day.
Ironing hair became popular as well. A precursor to the straightening flat irons of today, kids would pull out the iron before school and iron their skirts, blouses and then… Their hair. No one cared about the burned fingers – their hair looked pretty good, at least until lunch time. Frizz fights back and always wins. Even gym class can bring the frizzies back – start sweating and see what happens!
Mind you, frizz is a different enemy than naturally curly hair – which few people mind at all. Frizz resembles a Brillo pad, and in a pinch, could probably be used for heavy kitchen chores since it’s so hard and course. Even an expensive and time consuming blow dry at a high end salon isn’t going to keep your frizz straight and beautiful in a rain shower, or a walk on the beach at night.
Decades later, frizzy hair is still a major issue that salons and hair care companies have been battling with little success. Many victims of frizz would rather have science find a permanent and safe solution for the frizz instead of finding ways to get rid of wrinkles! Why? Because even the most beautiful complexion won’t make a women with a head of frizz look attractive. All eyes are on the hair.
The process can be expensive, and is time consuming, however, those who have had tried it do have some very positive feedback. They do admit it’s not the perfect solution to cure the frizz. Keratinizing does not straighten hair, nor does it make that promise. What it does promise is that your hair will be soft and manageable enough to style (blow dry, etc.) and the style will last longer than with more conventional methods or products.
The other option is a new process called keratinizing. It’s expensive but it lasts for up to five months. It doesn’t straighten the hair, but it softens it to the point that the hair gets so relaxed it just falls limp.
