There are many myths about hair care in circulation these days. Whether we share them in the restroom at work or read them online, they just won’t go away. But before you take extreme action be sure you’ve properly separated fact from fiction when it comes to problems with your tresses.

Fact or Fiction: Can my ponytail cause a bald spot?

This one’s true. By pulling hair into a tight ponytail, it strains the hair follicles and eventually kills them. This prevents new hair from growing back. To avoid getting a bald spot someday tie your hair loosely or do a high ponytail rather than a lower one. You can also try a side ponytail.

Fact or Fiction: If you trim your hair frequently it will grow faster.

So not true. Your mane might seem fuller after removing the dry ends but it doesn’t make it grow faster. If you want to make it grow faster you might want to keep your hair and roots healthy by conditioning and taking your vitamins everyday. That’s something that you can’t get from trims.

Fact or Fiction: By massaging your scalp will that make hair grow?

Fiction. By massaging your scalp, you’re stimulating the hair follicles, possibly releasing oils and relaxing it. This may also increase blood flow to keep the cells that produce hair fit and strong. But with or without the massage your tresses grow about half an inch each month.

Fact or Fiction: Dry scalp causes dandruff.

Not really. You see dandruff is a medical condition. It’s really a form of eczema of the scalp. What triggers it is some harmless yeast that your skin tries to get rid of it by shedding cells. Those are commonly called dandruff flakes. Normally you can cure this with medicated anti-dandruff shampoo. Most find the dandruff starts to disappear within a matter of days.

Fact or Fiction: You can permanently change the texture of your hair using chemical straighteners.

Fact is curly hair is curly hair. Though temporarily chemically straightened, your hair’s true self returns after a few months of unfettered growth.

Fact or Fiction: Brushing my hair regularly makes it healthier.

Actually all that 100 strokes stuff turns out to be more old wives tale than truth. You see, brushing too many times may lead to cuticle damage. That can lead to split ends and even more breakage. You only want to brush enough to eliminate tangles. And even that is best done with a comb.

Fact or Fiction: Coloring will damage my hair.

Not hardly. The process can change the appearance but it’s not likely to damage your hair. In fact you may have noticed you have more body after coloring. This is because your hair shafts swell as a result. This is also why those with fine or thinning hair are advised to color over even with a shade close to their natural one to have thicker looking hair.

After laying the cards down surely you’ll accept the truth about your hair. Not only will these clarify your preconceived notion about hair problems but it will clear things up as well. Leaving you room to take care of your hair in a fuss-free way.
