Creating A Fantastic Updo

Posted by Alison Heath On January - 16 - 2012

Prom is just around the corner, and you’re very likely to be planning what hairstyle to wear that night. While many of your friends may end up spending a fortune getting their hair done at a salon, you can easily do your hair at home and achieve stunning results. The key is in the details.

It can be hard to make perfect twists and dramatic effects at home. But with the help of shortcuts, you can have beautiful results. Here are a few hairdos you can do at home.

The Loose & Romantic Updo

Do you remember Kate Winslet’s hair in the Titanic film? It’s very easy to do. You just have to have a medium-sized curling iron, bobby pins, and super-hold finishing spray.

To begin, start with dry hair. Spray your hair with some hairspray and start curling your hair into ringlets. You can do this by taking 1/2 inch sections starting in the nape while pinning the rest of the hair up. After doing the whole head, you’ll have curls like Shirley Temple’s. (But you shouldn’t worry because you’re not done yet.)

Next, pull hair in 1″ sections from around the hair line. Twisting slightly and loosely, pull the sections up and back toward the top of the crown and pin into place. Do this to the whole perimeter of your head until you’ve got all of your hair pinned up. You can rearrange the curls if they look funky on the crown. You can also leave some tendrils of hair falling around your face and neck. Spray on some hairspray to hold the curls.

The Fun And Modern Updo

This is really easy to do. Start again dry hair. You should create a dramatic parting in the front and top of the head. You can choose between a zigzag parting, an angled parting, or some other type. The rest of your hair should be at the nape of your neck in a temporary ponytail. Hold the ponytail in your fist, twist up until the ends of the hair are pointing up and over the crown, leaving only about an inch of hair. You can use a clip to hold it in place and fan the ends out with styling wax. Put on some hairspray.

You see, it’s not that hard. You’d get a fantastic and unique hairdo that doesn’t cost much money while your friends spend so much on identical hairdos.

Should I Wear My Hair Up Or Down?

Posted by Ashley Houston On January - 14 - 2012

Isn’t this what women usually worry about when they have a formal event coming up? While it may seem like a trivial question to most, how you wear your hair can make a big difference on your overall formal appearance. Choosing the wrong hairstyle to wear with a certain dress can make you look too over the top or make you look like you didn’t pay as much attention to your hair as you should.

The design of your dress is a very important thing to consider when choosing a hairstyle. Notice the cut of the dress. Is it long, cropped, off the shoulder? Does it have plumes on the shoulders or lace around the neck? These are all very important factors.

Here are just a few basic rules of thumb to help you decide.

For the off shoulder or strapless dresses: These types of dresses expose the neck and shoulders. Many would wear their hair up with these types of dresses, but doing so could make the neck look too long and thin, and the attention could be drawn away from the curve of the neck and shoulders. So if you want to wear your hair up, make sure you go with a style that leaves a little hair hanging down the neck and shoulders. This will make you look better. It would also balance your look.

Full-shouldered dresses. These would include those dresses that have full, intricate, or puffed sleeves. You usually have to wear your hair up if you wear these dresses. If you leave your hair down, your style would just look too busy. You should also choose a simple updo over an intricate one so that you do not end up looking like you’ve tried too hard. If you want the focal point to be your dress, try a simple French twist.

The classic cut and simple gowns. These gowns let you get really creative with your hair. You have the choice of having just about any hairdo. Just choose between different styles.

So remember, your dress is your guide when choosing your hairstyle. It would let you have a great look.
