Do you cringe every time you see your dull, lackluster hair in the mirror? Do you silently crave silky, healthy and shiny hair instead? All is not lost. Regardless of your hair type dull over processed hair can be revitalized. Try out these tips for shiny hair and don’t be surprised if you don’t have glossier hair to show off soon too.

Far too often dull hair results from such things as using excessive amounts of styling products resulting in dulling product built up. Too much exposure the sun doesn’t help either. Neither do chemical treatments like coloring or straightening that were done to your hair without the proper conditioning.

Reason being when your hair has been stressed by the sun, chlorine or too much heat it will likely be dry. Sometimes it is so bad inner layers of the hair are damaged too because the cuticle is breached. Still cuticles that are raised can result in dull looking hair since that alone is enough to deaden the shine.

So here are some things you can do to get shiny hair.

Proper conditioning and shampooing are words to live by if you seek shinier hair. The idea is to alternate shine enhancing shampoos that have olive or jojoba oil and the like on the label with your old favorites. And avoiding clarifying shampoo if at all possible since those can suck out more moisture than you’d like.

After you step out of the shower remember to pat your hair dry rather than getting into a rubbing frenzy. Then if you have fine hair apply a glossing cream. While shine serum can help polish frizzy hair or locks that tend to run on the wild side.

When blow drying the idea is to direct the hot air away from your head to keep the ends flat so they reflect light best. The trick is to start at the roots and always point the nozzle of the blow dryer downward, rather than upward or against the shaft.

Oh and while your hair is still warm mist a bit of shine spray on the ends.

Coloring can be hard on your hair too. If you must color consider highlights instead since less of your hair is exposed to the shine robbing chemicals. Then too if you color protect your hair using color treated shampoos which are generally gentler on your hair.

Finally it’s true that some are simply born with shinier hair. Because straight hair will be the shiniest since it’s just common sense that such hair will reflect light best. While those of us with natural curls will have to live with less shine since the light is naturally diffused off such strands.

Now you know what to do so you too can have shiny hair. Or least what you can do to maximize the shine potential of your mane.
